Formerly known as 'British Honduras', Belize was a
British colony until 1981. The British made Belize
part of their empire because of the abundance of
exotic hardwood trees, such as teak and mahogany.
British classical architecture, language and
common law are all part of Belize.
The Spanish empire colonized the countries
surrounding Belize. It is easy to see why the
Spanish fought the British in the 1700's to try to
make Belize their own. The harmonious relationship
between Belize and its neighbors is reflected in
the Free Trade Zone at the border with Mexico. You
can go to Chetumal, Mexico, a modern city of
approximately 350,000 people, for shopping,
dining, entertainment and medical care.
